Depart Muscat and travel towards the Hajar Mountains along the scenic Muscat–Nizwa highway, enjoying spectacular views as the landscape gradually rises towards Oman’s dramatic highlands.

10:00 AM — JEBEL SHAMS & GRAND CANYON VIEWPOINT

Arrive in the Jebel Shams area, home to Oman’s highest mountain and the spectacular canyon landscapes of Wadi Nakhar.

From the viewpoints, admire the immense scale of the mountains, where rugged slopes descend dramatically into deep valleys and wadis carved into the Hajar Mountains over millions of years.

The highland communities around Jebel Shams have traditionally adapted their way of life to the limited availability of water. Goat herding has long been an important part of local life, while traditional goat-hair weaving has produced distinctive handmade products that visitors can purchase as souvenirs.

10:30 AM — GRAND CANYON BALCONY HIKE

Set out on the spectacular Grand Canyon Balcony Walk, an approximately 6-kilometre hike along the canyon rim.

With an elevation change of approximately 200 metres, the trail offers breathtaking views deep into the canyon and across the surrounding mountain landscape.

Follow the historic trail towards the Abandoned Village, passing ancient agricultural terraces that benefited from the area’s natural spring water, sheltered location, and cooler high-altitude climate. These terraces were traditionally used to cultivate crops and fruits, including the region’s renowned pomegranates.

Along the route, discover remarkable geological formations and exposed rock layers that reveal the extraordinary geological history of the Hajar Mountains.

01:00 PM — PICNIC LUNCH AT THE ABANDONED VILLAGE

Take a well-deserved break and enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by the dramatic scenery of Jebel Shams and the Grand Canyon.

Experience the peaceful atmosphere of the historic abandoned settlement and appreciate the remarkable relationship between traditional mountain life and the surrounding environment.

03:00 PM — WADI NAKHAR

Continue to Wadi Nakhar, marvel at the immense canyon walls, which rise dramatically from the wadi floor, creating an extraordinary landscape with an elevation difference of up to approximately 1,500 metres.

Take time to view the traditional mud-and-stone village nestled along the mountainside and experience the striking contrast between Oman’s ancient settlements and its rugged natural surroundings.

Conclude your private Grand Canyon experience and begin the return journey to Muscat.

05:00 PM — TOUR CONCLUDES | MUSCAT
