In southern Oman’s Dhofar region, where the Arabian Sea meets rugged mountains, lies a world few travelers experience—a labyrinth of ancient caves hiding beneath monsoon-fed valleys. These rare pink saltwater lagoons, tinted by microorganisms and mineral reactions, appear seasonally in Dhofar. Once declared extinct in the wild, the majestic Arabian oryx—with its rapier-like horns and snow-white coat—now roams free again in Oman’s deserts thanks to one of history’s most successful conservation programs.
