This February, we embarked on an extraordinary 7-day expedition through the Dhofar region of Oman, hosting a dedicated group of Danish birders and wildlife enthusiasts. From the rugged coastline to the misty hills, we immersed ourselves in the region’s unique topography and varied habitats, uncovering the natural treasures that make Oman a world-class destination for nature lovers.
Encountering Giants of the Sea and Hidden Depths
Our Oman birding & wildlife expedition began with an exhilarating boat trip, where we were privileged to share the waters with the majestic Blue Whale, a true highlight for any wildlife enthusiast. We also ventured beneath the surface, exploring ancient caves that revealed the geological wonders of the region.
Twilight Encounters with Arabian Wildlife
As dusk settled over the Dhofar landscape, the wilderness came alive. Our evening observations rewarded us with rare and unforgettable sightings of the elusive Arabian Leopard, a testament to the region’s rich and fragile ecosystem.
A Raptor Spectacle in the Arabian Skies
The skies above Oman provided a breathtaking spectacle. We observed dozens of raptors soaring overhead during their peak migration. A particularly unforgettable moment came during a hike when a majestic Steppe Eagle glided past at an astonishing distance of less than five meters—a truly intimate wildlife encounter.
Over the course of the week, our group was delighted to identify and observe over 140 bird species, showcasing the incredible biodiversity of the area. The varied landscapes, from lush wadis to open plains, proved to be a haven for both resident and migratory birds.
Where Nature Meets History
Beyond the wildlife, we explored some of Salalah’s most breathtaking hiking paths and delved into the region’s rich cultural heritage with a visit to the Land of Frankincense, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This blend of natural wonder and ancient history provided the perfect conclusion to a remarkable journey.
