INVESTIGATING THE MOHO — EARTH’S MOST CRITICAL INTERNAL BOUNDARY
Embark on a rare scientific exploration as we investigate and physically examine the Mohorovičić Discontinuity (Moho) — the key boundary separating the Earth’s mantle from the base of the oceanic crust. This geological contact zone is among the most important internal structures on our planet, influencing plate tectonics, volcanic activity, and the dynamic evolution of Earth’s surface.
During this field experience, you will observe firsthand the remarkable shift in rock composition and texture that marks the transition toward the mantle below. This unique opportunity not only deepens understanding of Earth’s internal architecture but also brings you face-to-face with one of geology’s most fascinating global features.
EXPLORE 600 MILLION YEARS OF GEOLOGICAL TIME
Step into a living timeline of Earth’s history as we explore dramatic valleys that reveal over 600 million years of geological evolution. Beginning at the mouth of the wadi, we encounter Cretaceous formations (~90 Ma) — rocks shaped during the final age of dinosaurs — and progress deeper into the canyon where the landscape transitions into Late Proterozoic strata (>600 Ma), recording ancient environments long before complex life flourished.
This remarkable journey through Supersequence A offers a rare chance to witness major chapters of our planet’s past stacked layer upon layer. It is an immersive outdoor classroom that brings the story of Earth to life beneath your very feet.
DISCOVER THE ANGULAR UNCONFORMITY — A 300-MILLION-YEAR GEOLOGICAL MYSTERY
Stand before one of Earth’s most revealing geological boundaries — an angular unconformity where Mid-Permian rocks (~270 million years old) lie directly atop Late Proterozoic formations exceeding 600 million years in age. The dramatic tilt and erosion of the older rocks beneath the flat-lying younger layers mark a profound chapter of Earth history that is missing from the rock record.
This striking gap — more than 300 million years — represents vanished mountains, shifting seas, and intense tectonic forces that reshaped landscapes long before life emerged onto land as we know it. Observing this boundary offers a rare chance to witness deep time: a visible reminder of how much of Earth’s past remains preserved only in the silent spaces between rock layers.
LUNCH

DISCOVER PILLOW LAVA & BASALT HEXAGONAL COLUMNS
ourney back in time to when this landscape lay deep beneath the ocean. Here, we explore pillow lava — rounded volcanic formations created as molten basalt rapidly cooled upon contact with seawater — preserving dramatic evidence of ancient seafloor eruptions.
As the terrain transitions inland, the volcanic story continues with striking hexagonal basalt columns, formed through the slow cooling and contraction of lava flows that fractured into geometric perfection. Together, these volcanic features offer an unforgettable window into the dynamic forces that shaped Earth’s crust and the shifting boundary between oceanic and continental environments.

By David Patel(Oman)February 25, 2024 THE TOURS WAS CAREFULLY PLANNED AND BEAUTIFULLY CARRIED OUTThank you for the two brilliant geology day tours, the tours were carefully planned and beautifully carried out. We learned about continental collisions, mountain-building, erosion, the opening and closing of oceans, rock formations, folds and faults, great extinction, and more! The guides were excellent teachers and shared their deep knowledge of the Sultanat's geoheritage and culture. The explanation of the 4,800 million years of the formation of the earth into 1 year and how the events occurred from the atmosphere formation to the occurrence of humans was so interesting. The picnics at the top of the MOHO & the ancient ocean floor were planned very well. We had a lot of fun! This was my first Panorama Travel Geo trip, and I look forward to joining the longer trip. Thank you for the wonderful time David PatelDate of Experience: February 24, 2025
