An Epic Model in the Transition of Power

Oman has named Haitham bin Tariq Al Said as the country’s new Sultan following the death of his cousin Sultan Qaboos bin Said Al Said. The former culture minister was sworn in as the new sultan of Oman after a meeting of the royal family which decided to appoint the one who was chosen by the late sultan. The transition of power to the new Sultan happened very fast and smoothly reflects unity of Oman its culture, history, people, establishments, low and respect and trust of its royal family.

Today morning, The Sultan Haitham bin Tariq took the constitutional oath in a joint session of the State Council and the Shura Council. Then he addressed a word to the people and to the world.

“We will continue as always … contributing and calling for peaceful and amicable solutions for all disputes”

“The least we hope for is to follow in his [Qaboos] footsteps and remain guided by his wisdom into the future, and preserve … the achievements he made,” Sultan Haitham bin Tariq said in paying tribute to the late sultan.

Then the allegiance was made by the Ruling Family Council, the Defense Council, the ministerial Council, the State Council and the Shura Council. Then he headed to the honor guard platform, where the royal anthem was played, and the artillery fired 21 shots saluting to His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tariq. After that, His Majesty the Sultan boarded the royal convoy to the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque to participate in the mourning ceremony of late Sultan.

Sultan Hitham Bin Traiq Al Said

In 1979 Sultan Hitham bin Tariq graduated from the Oxford University Foreign Service Program. He was the first head of the Oman Football Association in the early 1980s and is known as a sports enthusiast.

Sultan Haitham is the Chairman of the committee for the future vision of “Oman 2040″.

Sultan Haitham Bin Tariq Bin Taimur Al Said served as a special envoy to the late Sultan Qaboos Bin Said on different occasions and held various positions in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He served as the Undersecretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for Political Affairs from 1986 to 1994, and later appointed as the Secretary General for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (1994–2002).

He is also the honorary president of the Oman Association for the Disabled and the honorary president of the “Omani-Japanese Friendship Association.”
